Why did Mystery Science make these Grade 1 updates?
Animal Traits & Survival unit updates
New Lesson 3: Why are baby birds so loud?
- 1-LS1-2. Read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive.
- Mystery Science previously covered 1-LS1-2 with only a read-along and no hands-on activity. We developed this new lesson to show many examples of both parents and offspring exhibiting behaviors that contribute to their survival. There is a new 2-part hands-on activity where students first pretend to be parent birds that bring food to their baby birds. They also pretend to be baby birds, chirping to ask for food from their parents and staying quiet to avoid predators. Through this lesson, students discover patterns of parent and offspring behaviors that help the offspring. The current read-along will be provided as an extension to this new lesson.
We’re always listening to reviews, to what’s happening in classrooms, and to what teachers & students need most. With a growth mindset at our core, we continually fine-tune our lessons to reflect strong, research-based practices.
