Have you ever wondered the difference between our science units and mini-lessons like Amari here?
Dear Mystery Science,
I just logged into Mystery Science for the first time and I don’t know which type of lesson to start with! The last science curriculum I used had a big textbook with a teacher’s guide, so digital materials still feel new to me. I’ve explored mysteryscience.com and I see science units and mini-lessons, but what’s the difference?
Thanks,
Amari
No worries – we’re so excited you’re here!
Both options feature open-and-go online videos that inspire kids to love science, but there are a few differences.
This chart will help you understand what makes each option unique:
Science Units | Mini-lessons |
Science units are organized by grade level and include full lessons. We highly encourage you to teach the lessons within each unit, in order. | Mini-lessons are great for any age and can be taught in any order |
Each full lesson video lasts about 30-45 minutes | Each mini-lesson video lasts about 5-7 minutes |
Every full lesson includes a hands-on activity | Some mini-lessons include a hands-on activity |
All science units feature supplemental materials and assessments | Some mini-lessons feature bonus Top-5 videos and extensions |
Science units are aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) | Mini-lessons are a bite-sized way to introduce more than just scientific phenomena -- in addition to science, they also highlight areas such as music, language, nutrition, and more |
