Lesson 1 - Why do plants grow flowers?
Activity: Make a Flower
What can we use instead of coffee or cinnamon?
We've heard from several teachers who used glitter as a successful alternative for the pollen! You could also use small confetti or similar materials from your local craft store.
Lesson 2 - Why do plants give us fruit?
Activity: Science Fruit or Vegetable
If there is a student with an allergy to any of these vegetables or fruits, can you suggest an alternative for teachers to use in place of food?
If you have a student with an allergy to one of the suggested fruits or vegetables, feel free to swap it out for something else. As long as you include a mix of vegetables that have seeds, and ones that don’t, you can still do the activity.
Photos are a good option for teachers who can’t bring food items into class. Show your students pictures of sliced fruits and vegetables and have them fill out their worksheets based on their observations.
Lesson 3 - Why are some apples red and some green?
Activity: Apple Taste Test
What can we do if we have a student with a food allergy, or can’t bring food into the classroom?
If you can't bring apples into your classroom, we recommend having students look at photos and observe the differences between apple varieties, such as shape, size, and color.
You may be able to ask parents to have their students taste different apples at home if they can, to share and discuss the next day.
