This lesson has replaced "What kinds of animals might there be in the future?" from the "Heredity, Survival, & Selection" unit.
- Activity: new worksheet
- New supplies: Glue sticks (1 per person)
We created this new lesson to more strongly align with the standard 3-LS3-1, so that students are more actively exploring trait variation and inheritance.
We added a step-by-step activity and a wrap-up to review what students discover for themselves in the activity. There is now a more engaging hands-on activity where students analyze trait inheritance between pigeon parents and offspring, and also examine trait variation among pigeon siblings. Students then apply this information to understand how inheritance and variation of traits can explain how dog and pigeon breeds arose through the process of artificial selection over many, many, many years.
