We know our Mystery Science videos are only the first step in teaching scientific concepts to your students, so we've created lesson extensions to help take your teaching to the next level.
You can find extra content to help teach lessons under the "Extend this lesson" section below the video. These extensions include valuable additional materials such as additional readings, assessments, complementing videos, activities, and transcripts. Please note, the extensions that are available will vary by lesson.
You can learn more about some of these extensions below:
Reading: Readings are suggested related texts that provide an excellent way to expand on the concepts taught in the lesson, as well as provide more reading and comprehension practice.
Assessments: Assessments typically take just 25-30 minutes to complete. They consist of short responses and fill-in-the-blank questions for students to answer after the lesson. Further information can be found in our article: Do you have Assessments?
Videos: Much like readings, the video extension provides an additional video related to the lesson, as well as accompanying questions you can ask your students in order to dive a little deeper into the concepts learned.
Activity: The activity section provides additional related hands-on activities beyond those provided in the lesson itself - it's a great way to further engage students in learning!
Transcripts: All of our lessons have full transcripts in English and Spanish available. Teachers can coordinate with parents to adapt these transcripts for at-home use. This can be achieved in a number of ways; one of them is adding pictures or screenshots to the transcripts to help guide the lesson. This would require some amount of coordination and planning, but it has proven to be successful for specific cases. Lesson transcripts can be found here.
